Green Seal

Introduction

Green Seal is a multi-attribute certification, founded by Denis Hayes, a community organizer for Earth Day 1990. Green Seal has over thirty-seven different standards to cover hotels, restaurants, paints, and cleaning and paper products. Green Seal contracts Underwriters Laboratories(UL) for testing, and audits are done regularly. The product-chain is reviewed from its product life cycle: material extraction to disposal. The certification's focus is of increased efficiency, and reduced externality (human and environmental toxicity, packaging, transportation, etc.). They've three typical standards: bronze, silver, and gold. The Green Seal standards have been recommended by the U.S. EPA and cited in LEED standards. It's intended to list the top 20% of products, in their category, for reduced impacts.
